The refurbishment measures include the installation of tree cutters on Niedringhaus-Allee, the creation of new parking lots, new sidewalks, pavements and cycle paths, the repaving of the road, tax incentives and the introduction of a new zoning restriction. Successful projects will improve air quality and help Granite Ciy residents feel better over an 18-month period.

Granite City can be divided into two districts, Granite Ciy, a single school district, and alternative school districts. Alternative schools include the alternative schools on the corner of Niedringhaus - Allee and Nordallee, both of which are connected to the WIC Service building, and an alternative secondary school in the area.

West Granite covers both industrial and low-income neighborhoods and struggles to beat the average crime rate. East Granites is less defined, but is mainly a mix of industrial, income, residential and commercial areas with a high crime rate.

Despite the danger of the great flood of 1993, the city was never flooded and is under protection. Horseshoe Lake is a great place to visit in Granite City because it has clean, beautiful water and the wildlife and landscape have been carefully preserved. It includes paved paths, hiking and biking trails, and a number of scenic views, and is set around HORSESHOE Lake State Park.

Interstates 255, 70, 55 and 64 run south and east of the city, and Interstate 270 runs north of the city. Two different axes of US 66 run through Granite City, one orange on the map below being the original axis from 1926 and the other a later axis of "US 66 City" from the 1940s. Downtown Granite City is currently home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University. D.C. Downtown, the southwestern part of the city, is located in the City of Washington and is an important hub for much of the industry, including steel mills. Since 2008, several large production companies have been operating in and around the city, as well as several small businesses and several universities both inside and outside the city. In 2008, several of these companies were operating in or near our city, including: General Electric, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, United Steelworkers, U.S. Steel, American Electric Co. and General Dynamics.

Granite City is located in the western part of the city and borders Horseshoe Lake to the southeast and the Illinois River to the north. Route 3 is a major thoroughfare on the western edge of our city, providing access to downtown St. Louis via the recently renovated McKinley Bridge. Madison County Transit offers a newly paved bike path through the county and through Granites City. The rail service is provided by the America Central Port of Granite State, which reportedly marks the southernmost point of U.S. Steel's Illinois operations and provides rail services to industrial companies in the U.S. Central Port of Granite City and to the United Steelworkers plant in Washington, Illinois.
